Punk protest: Sex Pistols manager's son sets fire to collection
Joe Corré on Burn Punk London Extinction: “It’s about whether punk rock actually meant anything”

from NME:

Today saw Joe Corré burn £5 million of rare punk memorabilia, beginning with the destruction of an original acetate copy of the Sex Pistols’ ‘Anarchy in the UK’.

Corré, who is the son of Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McClaren, made headlines earlier this year when he vowed to burn his expensive collection in protest of Punk.London’s year-long celebration of 40 years of punk music. Corré also claimed that the celebration has been endorsed by the Queen, and criticised institutions like the BFI, Museum of London (where Corré appeared earlier this month for a Punk.London debate), and the Roundhouse for turning punk into “a museum piece.”

Fans have called out Corré on his actions, stating that the memorabilia should instead be placed in a museum or sold to help the homeless. In a new interview with Navaz Batliwalla, Corré has opened up about the stunt, saying; “It’s not about me. It’s about whether punk rock actually meant anything on one level.”

He continued; “It’s about trying to get people to get their head around the difference between price and value. It’s about drawing attention to the hypocrisy of these establishment institutions now making money out of these pastiche versions. How long’s it going to be before they put a Queen’s jubilee mug with a safety pin through her nose in the palace gift shop? It’s not long is it? Forty years to go from public enemy number one to everyone seeing the UK as the birth of punk, so that’s now a valued tourist attraction item that we can use. Well go ahead but people like me will have something to say about it.”

Asked whether he’s had support for the cause, he replied; “There’s been a hell of a lot of reaction and that’s what’s important,” before adding, “I didn’t start this with a master plan, this is someone giving me an opening goal and saying do you want to be a conformist and join this thing like everybody else and celebrate Punk London?”

Vivienne Westwood also made a speech about climate change at the event, stating; “My job as an activist is to try to make things clear so that we can understand things and find the solution.” You can see footage from the speech below.

Meanwhile, Corré also responded to a rumour that he had been burning fakes. Posting on Twitter, he responded to a tweet accusing him of using fakes, writing “no you will see photos to come and a doc too!”. He has also posted that “Julian Assange is the only punk left.”

Responding to those criticising him for not selling the merchandise to help the homeless, he wrote; “Stay tuned, it’s all to come” as well as “All will be revealed…” You can see those tweets and responses below.

Bernie Sanders meets Spike Lee:
‘Where do we go? Where is the hope?

from The Guardian:

The senator and the film-maker discuss Trump, where Clinton went wrong – and how to make a difference in 2017
by Emma Brockes

Bernie Sanders charges head-first into a hotel room in midtown Manhattan, a man with no time to waste. This is not the campaign-era Bernie, the Bernie of memes and ice-cream flavours and jokey, Feel The Bern fun. All that has been swept away and replaced with something harder, more urgent, a sense that, with Clinton vanquished, cometh the hour, cometh the man, so that even to call him Bernie at this point feels wrong. In this guise, Senator Sanders, an outsider throughout the campaign, shows himself to be a politician of 40 years’ standing, with a desire to fight politics with politics and no tolerance for weeping, kvetching or the need for catharsis. The only noticeable hangover of his formerly whimsical style is his habit of saying everything twice. Sanders makes “Yup, yup” sound like the gravest assessment in the world.

Spike Lee, on the other hand, is emotional. He campaigned for Sanders and wants a hug from him, reassurance that things will be OK and an acknowledgment that the world has gone mad, appeals towards which the senator shows some understanding and also undisguised irritation. The two men occupy different positions on the same side, one representing the political opposition to Trump, the other the cultural opposition. Lee wants direction from Sanders on how that opposition might work, but he also wants recognition that conciliation with Trump, the politician’s instinct, is not at the expense of core values.

In this, they differ. Lee, like so many of us, might be said to have the luxury of total opposition, of total rejection of Trump and vilification of his supporters. Sanders, somewhat surprisingly given his reputation as uncompromising, takes a more strategic line even than colleagues such as Harry Reid, the senate minority leader, who earlier this month issued a strong repudiation of Trump when he described him as “a sexual predator who lost the popular vote and fuelled his campaign with bigotry and hate”.

Sanders condemns those aspects of Trump, but is reluctant to characterise millions of white, working-class voters as racists, through what I suspect is political pragmatism and deep sentiment, given his own background is white working class. Lee is not so ready to give Trump voters the benefit of the doubt. It is a fascinating exchange.

Bernie Sanders Hey, Spike, how are you?

Spike Lee I feel terrible, Senator.

BS I understand that. I understand that.

SL I want to thank you, though. Because what you did is great. And reading this stuff that’s coming out – the revelations about Wasserman [Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former chair of the Democratic National Committee, who during the campaign leaked emails shown to be biased against Sanders in favour of Clinton] and Donna Brazile [interim DNC chair, who gave Clinton a heads-up on questions in advance of a CNN debate], whom I know. Cheating goes both ways, huh? [Laughs.]

BS Well, you know. We took on the entire establishment and that’s what happens. But we have some enormously difficult times now. We gotta go forward, and I look forward to working with you to make that happen.

SL Well, anything I can do to help. But look at these [Trump] appointees – who’s this guy, Bannon? Brannon?

BS Bannon.

SL Whoooo!

BS He’s going to be policy adviser or something.

SL Hahahahahahahahaha!

BS Yup.

SL You know what Malcolm X said? It was a famous quote that got him into trouble, but that comes to mind. He said, “Chickens come home to roost.” And it seems to me, all this stuff today was a reaction to day one, when Obama put his right hand on Lincoln’s bible. I think things started on the day a black man became president of the United States. This all happened eight years ago.

BS Well, I think, Spike, that’s part of it. I don’t think it’s the whole thing, though.

SL But I think it’s a large part of it.

BS Well, I think a number of people who voted for Obama once, or twice, voted for Trump. And I think the issue is that there are millions of people in this country who voted for Trump but do not accept… I’m not going to deny for a second that there’s a lot of racism and xenophobia and sexism out there; there certainly is. But there are a whole lot of other people who are just really, really hurting. They’re working two or three jobs, they’re worried about their kids, they can’t afford to send them to childcare or to college. And Trump comes along and says, “I’m a champion of the working class.” And he’s a good showman and a good entertainer, and people believed him.

But our job now, it seems to me, is in three areas. Number one: to fight him tooth and nail in any movement toward racism, xenophobia, sexism, trying to divide our country up. And number two: if he is at all sincere – and we will see if he is – in developing programmes to create jobs and raise wages, I think we should work with him. But I’ll tell you what also concerns me, not just for this country but the planet, is this guy thinks that climate change is a hoax. Well, let me tell you, it ain’t a hoax. Climate change is real, and if we don’t transform our energy system, the planet we leave for our kids and grandchildren may not be a pretty place.

SL What also is troublesome, which I’ve tossed and turned over at night: the man has the nuclear codes.

BS Yup, yup.

SL [Laughs incredulously.] The man has the nuclear codes.

BS I agree.

SL Excuse me, if I may, sir; you know I love sports. I’ve seen it too many times, when a team thinks they’ve got it all won, just wrapped up, and you see players go down the sideline and start celebrating, and then they reach the goal line and fumble. The Clintons – and I’m not asking you for a comment; this is my opinion – thought they had it won. And what do the great coaches always say? Keep playing until there is no time on the clock! And it seems to me the Clintons were celebrating before the day was up.

BS [Mirthlessly.] Ha.

SL It was not Hillary Clinton’s birthright to be president of the United States of America! And Trump, he played it like he was going to keep going at this until the whistle blows, until time has run out.

BS Right. You’re right. Now, no one can deny that Trump was holding three or four rallies a day, he was running all over this country, working 20 hours a day. And that’s the truth. But I think that speaks to, Spike, something that goes beyond Hillary Clinton. It really goes to the very nature of the Democratic party.

SL The DNC!

BS That’s right. And it calls for the transformation of the Democratic party, and making it clear it’s going to be a party that brings together blacks and whites and Latinos and women and gays, and everyone else. But it’s also going to be a party…

SL Would you say that it’s a shambles, now, Senator – the DNC?

BS Yes. Yes. And I am supporting…

SL There’s a whole lot of finger-pointing going on.

BS Yes. I think we need a house-cleaning. I think the DNC needs an entirely new direction. I think it needs leadership, and I think it needs to be very clear about the fact that it stands with working families and is prepared to take on the billionaire class and Wall Street, and corporate America, and the drug companies and the insurance companies. People are hurting. And we need a programme that stands with working families and brings people together.

SL Were you ever offered the VP position, sir?

BS No. Absolutely not.

SL Would you have taken it?

BS Er. Probably, yes. But that’s again looking through the rear-view mirror.

SL I mean, we’re all looking upon the debris and trying to say, excuse my language, what the f? I mean, when I woke up that morning, the world is different. It’s a different world.

BS It is a very different world. And it’s a very frightening world. [Brusquely.] But we gotta get beyond that.

SL The man has the nuclear codes.

BS Yup.

SL Let me ask you another question. How can you tell another country that they’ve got to pay for a wall? Or fences? How does that work?

BS Well, Spike, I think what you are going to find is that a lot of the hyperbole, a lot of the rhetoric that Mr Trump used in his campaign, ends up not being terribly relevant to the real world.

SL So you think his voters are not going to hold him to the outrageous stuff he said he’d do?

BS Well, I think in some ways they may not. I think what we’ve got to do is hold him accountable for the statements he made about raising wages and creating jobs, and I think we gotta fight him tooth and nail on the outrageous…

SL But how do we do that if they [the Republicans] have the House and the Senate? How do we do that?

BS Well, we do it because it turns out that, on every major issue facing the American people, our view is the popular view, the view supported by the American people, and Mr Trump’s is not. For example: we are going to work hard to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. The vast majority of Democrats and, actually, Republicans believe in that. We’re going to fight to rebuild the infrastructure and create millions of jobs, making public colleges and universities tuition-free, dealing with student debt, childcare – all of these issues have the support of the American people. We have got to put him on the defensive, and that speaks to a need where you can play a great role – you and other people who know how to do media – which is to bring people together around the progressive agenda.

SL All right, but doesn’t the president of the United States appoint the Supreme Court justices?

BS Oh, he sure does. All right, look. That’s the reality, Spike; you’re talking about reality. Yes, he’s going to be the president. That’s the fact. Our job is to determine what we can do in opposition to him. That’s where we are right now. And we have to be very, very smart about that.

SL We’re going to need your leadership, sir.

BS Well, Spike, here’s the story, to the degree that my leadership means anything. It means we bring people together. You know what? The vast majority of the American people do not think that Roe v Wade should be ended. Our job is to make it clear that if he goes forward in that direction, there is a price to pay. What politics is about is this: you may hold a point of view, but if I can rally massive opposition to your point of view, you may rethink that point of view. That’s where we’re at. I do not think the American people want to overturn Roe v Wade. I do not think that the American people want to be deporting millions of people. I don’t think the American people want to stop Muslim people coming into this country. But I do think the American people want an economic agenda that works for working people, not just billionaires. So the way you defeat or slow down your opponents is that you bring people together, and you show that he is on the wrong side of history. That’s the best we can do.

SL What are your comments, Senator, on the uprising we’ve seen across the United States after the results?

BS Well, as you just indicated, you and I woke up that morning very disturbed and upset, and people are taking to the streets to express their disappointment and their anger. Our job is to convert that anger into a constructive effort to stop Trump’s worst policies and to force him to do something that’s relevant to the American people.

SL Haven’t there been several studies done that show you would have defeated Donald Trump?

BS Yes. There have been several polls that suggested that.

SL [Long silence.] Hmmm. This is a rhetorical question, but I just want readers to understand this, very clearly. Where do we go? Where is the hope?

BS OK, here is where the hope is. The hope is to understand that the Democratic party has stumbled very significantly in the last number of decades. It’s not just this election, Spike, as disastrous as it has been. It is the fact that the Republican party controls the Senate, controls the US House, controls something like two-thirds of the governor seats in this country, and that the Democrats have lost over 900 state legislature seats in the last eight years. What that tells me is that the Democratic party has got to very fundamentally rethink who it is and where it goes. It has to shed the current situation where it’s a party of the liberal elite, a party of wealthy people who give substantial sums – we can use that money, that’s fine, but it must reidentify itself as a party of working people. Whether you’re black, white, Latino, there are millions of people today who are working longer hours for lower wages, and they’re seeing almost all new income and wealth going to the top 1%. The Democratic party has got to say we are on the side of the 99%. Our party is not about having fancy fundraisers, it’s about going into union halls, veterans’ halls, farm communities, the inner cities. It has to bring people together around the progressive agenda and make government work for all of us and not the 1%. That’s why I’m supporting Keith Ellison [as prospective chair of the DNC].

SL Who?

BS Keith Ellison. Of Minnesota.

SL Oh, yes. He’s the Muslim brother, right?

BS Yes. He’s a very good guy, and he’s the co-chair of the house progressive caucus. Very progressive guy. And I think Keith understands that the future of the Democratic party is a grassroots party. So I’m going to be supporting him and shaking up the Democratic party.

SL Let me ask you another question. The coalition that Obama got, that put him in office – did the Clinton campaign think it would automatically win [those people] without having to work? I don’t understand it. Because I did not feel the energy there was for Obama – even for you – for Hillary Clinton. I respect the woman, but the enthusiasm wasn’t there.

BS I think nobody would argue with you on that. What we have seen is that in 2008 Obama ran a historical campaign where the turnout was extraordinarily high: enthusiasm in the minority community, strong support in the white working class, and that carried over in 2012. But in 2016, what we saw – I think your point is quite right – it would be hard to suggest that the people of this country were enthusiastic about the Clinton campaign. There was not the energy we have seen in the Obama campaign, and what ended up happening was voter turnout was low. She won the black community overwhelmingly, but turnout was low. She lost a lot of white, working-class people. That’s just the fact.

SL I’m still trying to figure something out.

BS How she lost white women?

SL Yeah.

BS I’ll tell you how. A, Hillary Clinton got more popular votes than Donald Trump. Let’s not forget that. B, Every poll I saw showed Donald Trump was enormously unpopular. C, A lot of people who voted for Donald Trump did not vote for his racist statements, his statements on immigration, on women. They didn’t support that. But what Trump tapped into is a lot of economic angst and anger and frustration.

SL You think people can separate the racist and sexist comments he made from his policies?

BS Yes. I think what they are saying is, “I need a job, my kid needs to go to college, Mr Trump is promising that. I think he will probably not carry through on his racist, sexist policies. Let’s vote for the economic issues.” That’s what I think happened. So you had a lot of white, working-class women who did not appreciate his sexist remarks, but who do want to see an improvement in the economy.

I gotta run now, Spike, but let’s get together in the not too distant future.

NYTimes Op-Ed
No, Trump, We Can’t Just Get Along

by Charles M. Blow

Donald Trump schlepped across town on Tuesday to meet with the publisher of The New York Times and some editors, columnists and reporters at the paper.

As The Times reported, Trump actually seemed to soften some of his positions:

He seemed to indicate that he wouldn’t seek to prosecute Hillary Clinton. But he should never have said that he was going to do that in the first place.

He seemed to indicate that he wouldn’t encourage the military to use torture. But he should never have said that he would do that in the first place.

He said that he would have an “open mind” on climate change. But that should always have been his position.

You don’t get a pat on the back for ratcheting down from rabid after exploiting that very radicalism to your advantage. Unrepentant opportunism belies a staggering lack of character and caring that can’t simply be vanquished from memory. You did real harm to this country and many of its citizens, and I will never — never — forget that.

As I read the transcript and then listened to the audio, the slime factor was overwhelming.

After a campaign of bashing The Times relentlessly, in the face of the actual journalists, he tempered his whining with flattery.

At one point he said:

“I just appreciate the meeting and I have great respect for The New York Times. Tremendous respect. It’s very special. Always has been very special.”

He ended the meeting by saying:

“I will say, The Times is, it’s a great, great American jewel. A world jewel. And I hope we can all get along well.”

I will say proudly and happily that I was not present at this meeting. The very idea of sitting across the table from a demagogue who preyed on racial, ethnic and religious hostilities and treating him with decorum and social grace fills me with disgust, to the point of overflowing. Let me tell you here where I stand on your “I hope we can all get along” plea: Never.

You are an aberration and abomination who is willing to do and say anything — no matter whom it aligns you with and whom it hurts — to satisfy your ambitions.

I don’t believe you care much at all about this country or your party or the American people. I believe that the only thing you care about is self-aggrandizement and self-enrichment. Your strongest allegiance is to your own cupidity.

I also believe that much of your campaign was an act of psychological projection, as we are now learning that many of the things you slammed Clinton for are things of which you may actually be guilty.

You slammed Clinton for destroying emails, then Newsweek reported last month that your companies “destroyed emails in defiance of court orders.” You slammed Clinton and the Clinton Foundation for paid speeches and conflicts of interest, then it turned out that, as BuzzFeed reported, the Trump Foundation received a $150,000 donation in exchange for your giving a 2015 speech made by video to a conference in Ukraine. You slammed Clinton about conflicts of interest while she was secretary of state, and now your possible conflicts of interest are popping up like mushrooms in a marsh.

You are a fraud and a charlatan. Yes, you will be president, but you will not get any breaks just because one branch of your forked tongue is silver.

I am not easily duped by dopes.

I have not only an ethical and professional duty to call out how obscene your very existence is at the top of American government; I have a moral obligation to do so.

I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything, but rather to speak up for truth and honor and inclusion. This isn’t just about you, but also about the moral compass of those who see you for who and what you are, and know the darkness you herald is only held at bay by the lights of truth.

It’s not that I don’t believe that people can change and grow. They can. But real growth comes from the accepting of responsibility and repenting of culpability. Expedient reversal isn’t growth; it’s gross.

So let me say this on Thanksgiving: I’m thankful to have this platform because as long as there are ink and pixels, you will be the focus of my withering gaze.

I’m thankful that I have the endurance and can assume a posture that will never allow what you represent to ever be seen as everyday and ordinary.

No, Mr. Trump, we will not all just get along. For as long as a threat to the state is the head of state, all citizens of good faith and national fidelity — and certainly this columnist — have an absolute obligation to meet you and your agenda with resistance at every turn.

I know this in my bones, and for that I am thankful.

suddenlysaganI visited @woodstocksanctuary a couple yrs ago, & a turkey followed me around like a puppy & nuzzled me til I scratched her head. Intelligent, sensitive, goofy creatures. 2 friends I was with stopped eating animals after that visit. Ever since I broke down crying & refused to eat one almost 25 yrs ago @ 18, I'll never understand how I ever could.

6uncle6paulie6Id like to eat a vegan

brian_barnhart#atleastimfuckingtrying

sss_liverpoolThe false economy to get nutrients in the body - meat. An outdated practice of complicit killing that the so called "animal lovers" fail to recognise. Cats and dogs have all the luck as Gorilla Biscuits said...

glenefriedman@definitelynotkyletaylor as are people who don't give a shit about the environment. Beyond in fact.

glenefriedman@the_bondsman thanks for taking the time to write calm polite and decent. 🙏🏽Respected, but fact is we no longer need to kill animals for nourishment ✊🏽and in fact not eating animals in better for our planet, our bodies and the animals. Time for real change. I did it almost 30 years ago, it wasn't so easy then, nowadays there's no excuse except laziness, not knowing the realities, or just simply not giving a shit selfishness. Again i respect your thoughts and words, i urge you to watch COWspiracy @cowspiracy , "Forks Over Knives" or many other informative films on the subjects near and dear to all of our lives ✌🏽️

_jason_tracy@glenefriedman check out Peaceable Kingdom, the Journey Home. I believe its being released online soon.

tonylinn1I hunt for meat, I love it. Deer, Elk, Antelope, Pronghorn, if we didn't hunt here in Oklahoma, we would have an out of control population of deer, that would devistate farms, just like the feral hog population is doing. I eat and use everything I hunt...besides, it's just not fun hunting broccoli

erich_x_x_x_tattoo@definitelynotkyletaylor Selfish folks who harm whatever is in the way of pleasing their senses are truly annoying. Destroy the Earth for a flavor that you're too weak to overcome. Sad.

definitelynotkyletaylor@erich_x_x_x_tattoo my point in case

justaj67That's what I was wondering ☝️️, if no one eats all these animals what happens to them all? They would quickly take over.

erich_x_x_x_tattoo@definitelynotkyletaylor 😘😘😘

shagmeisterThere are some parts of the world that need an animal population control like Hawaii with the axis deer/boar problem, but then there is the industry of big meat and gmo fed and misstreated overproduced animals that's where things start getting gross and too big too understand

erich_x_x_x_tattoo@definitelynotkyletaylor At least we aren't as annoying as those civil rights activists, or worse... those goofs that are trying to protect sacred indigenous lands. Ew. People standing up for sentient beings, or the Earth, or their fellow humans... so annoying. Pull your head out of your ass and stand for something! Care about something! Do something and quit your whining about those who do!

glenefriedmanEducate yourselves a bit beyond what you are taught in schools and by corporations who only see and use you as consumers that most are , not by your own fault as children , but now that you are adults it's time to learn on your own as you fend for yourself, learn for yourself. Some of the points people make here just show me how disconnected and uneducated some of us are, its unfortunate. But if you respect what i have shared with my work and the people i have represented why not take it a step further and LISTEN to what else i am recommending 🙏🏽✌🏽️✊🏽

erich_x_x_x_tattoo@justaj67 They are bred in huge numbers, by forced impregnation, using stored semen, by humans, for food. If people stop buying and eating them, they will stop breeding them. No animal takeover will happen. It'll be okay.

definitelynotkyletaylor@erich_x_x_x_tattoo just shut the fuck up

78_gitanaAll you vegans I have a question I've tried to do it numerous times but I always end up getting super weak and sick, I take iron and b12 also and eat very healthy but I always end up needing somethibg more...any suggestions?😆🍃🌿💗

bgordonn@jasonskare 😘

bgordonn@howardhoodkanoa someone once said "thou shall not kill" there was no asterisk that said "applies to humans only"... Also if you don't agree with something, why support it? We can change the way the world produces food if the demand changes. It's not sustainable for the worlds population to consume meat and dairy with earth's environment. Fact. Thank you for speaking your mind and beliefs. Respect.

glenefriedman@xseanbonnerx great reply haaaaa. I don't know what happens to some of these old skaters believing these crazy tales... I'll be deleting all these TG posts later tonight or in the morning anyhow.

the_wurst1People really quote fairy tale scripture to justify anything.

• the_wurst1Ha, i didn't see the other dude basically what i just said. People scare the shit out of me. I'm becoming so withdrawn with every year that passes. Thank @glenefriedman for being one persom with a good head on your shoulders.

tonylinn1ᎣᏏᏲ (Osiyo, hello)Sometimes I come off half cocked in replies, but this subject strikes a cord with me. I know about you and "the plight of Native Americans", but as a member of the ᏣᎳᎩ / Tsalagi (Cherokee)Nation, we are NOT suffering, neither are the Nations represented here in Indian Territory, aka Oklahoma which is an Osage name Okla-huma meaning red land...it's become the latest celebrity cause to defend the "Indians"...believe me, we don't need charity, amd we do very well financially. The Huvasupai in Arizona live in a remote area at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and they like it that way. Only the Navajo and Sioux complain, they have let white mans alcohol ruin their people, and continue to let gang violence ruin their own families on the rez all of which they got from white mans influence. The only plight they need to rid themselves of, is of their own doing. I love my people, and weep for my other Native brothers and sisters, but they don't need charity, they need to recognize the need to stand on thier own and end their own plight. Peace, shalom (I'm also 1/2 Jewish), Salam, ᏩᏙ (Wado) thank you.

glenefriedman@tonylinn1 by plight, i just meant to have an understanding of what's been going on since the pilgrims had landed here, charity wasn't mentioned. In first grade i met my first best friend who was native american, i have been aware to some degree since, seeing the shit he had to deal with from that age i believe ✌🏽️ helped to politicize me for the rest of my life. No disrespect meant, only further understanding

• glenefriedmanFor idiots (and cool new comers) who ask "how do vegans enjoy ThanksGiving dinner?" Like most people lucky enough to be able to celebrate, with tons of incredible food stacked on my plate a few times and motherfucking crazy amounts of desert too... all VEGAN , from the obvious vegetables and grains, to "shredded unicorn" and "tofurkey" with stuffing , pumpkin pie, coconut cream pie, chocolate cake, gelato and sorbet + more i didnt choose to put on my plate, this is how we fucking do it, just fine. No over destruction of the environment, no cruelty to animals, no cancer causing flesh or dairy foods... all good, open you mind and look into it. This is not a religious quest, this is an educational one, so stop saying some religious figure of your imagination told you to eat animals, or you believe the propaganda put into our schools and medical universities to convince people of the need for the now unnecessary Animal foods just so they could profit and not give a shit about you, its just like cigarettes were and coal is, use them at your own peril, we know better now, but so many are too weak or greedy to look at the truth. Your loss and the worlds, becuase i am sure most of you mean well, but you're just so afraid of change, truth and science... scotttowneSay it loud, brother! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Had the Gardein Brand vegan "turkey" today myself.

mmoorestudios@glenefriedman with all due respect, seriously not slinging turds, if you don't want to eat animals, why do you want something to taste like animals?

purplenegativesTonight I had my 21st vegan Thanksgiving dinner. Happy Thanksgiving, @glenefriedman, thanks for speaking up for the voiceless.

indianajensen@mmoorestudios as a child most people grow up eating meat (like myself). We still have the taste for meat, but don't wish to harm the animals that produce that flavor. Instead, as vegans, we can eat foods that taste like meat that are animal free. Every once in a while I have a taste for chicken nuggets as I always had them as a child. Now when I want some, I can make some vegan ones!

kineticskateboarding❤️👊🌽🍊🍆 thanks for being an inspiration @glenefriedman

tae0neYou take classic pics but no need to be a dick to people with dif lifestyle choices. Not very punk tho.

glenefriedman@mmoorestudios most animal foods we grew up eating have the taste they do because of the sauces and other flavorings... and on this holiday it's easier for some people to have similar sensations WITHOUT contributing to destruction of the environment, our bodies, or the needless torture and slaughter of the animals. The "comfort" foods are not a crime. And i never said you can't enjoy particular flavors if anyone wants, its just how you get them and how your body works with them. ✌🏽️

thellymon@seab00t peace and blessings, dont get mad, we can all live together

ashlovesmongoVegan Thanksgiving is the best! This is my 21st, don't miss the dead stuff in the least.

thellymon@seab00t its passion for his values, hes trying to build on something that can only help others.

thellymon@seab00t only difference is theyre based on hate for others instead of love, get over it

thellymon@seab00t youre stereotyping people exactly as you say vegans do, so technically youre being just as hypocritical. everyones different and thats ok, but dont equate caring for hatefulness, because even though vegans (not all vegans are real vegans btw) may come off as being pompous jackasses, theyre only trying to help and care about animals, people and mother nature. So how is it a bad thing?

glenefriedman@seab00t "you people"? Cmon man, just read back what i said, calm down, its a fucking holiday, trying to inspire greatness and better things... "don't hate celebrate!" Sorry you've run into some vegan fascists, it happens, but if you think I'm full of shit, then just move on, but if you like the work why not take some simple advice? wordisjustawordTrump or turkey?!? Nice work this was rad!!!

djrosednaI've been vegan since 89 and make no excuses for any of this bs they throw. I like what tastes good. If that's "like meat" then whatever. Sorry you don't like that. That's a weak as fuck entry level ruse to avoid the point of the discussion. I don't mind putting ignorance in its place with vehemence if need be. If they're opinion can't handle a strong and truthful argument without calling foul, then what can you say? I'm also probably one of the rare breed who can argue on spiritual terms. I'll take on any of these level one religious flunkies any day. It's been my specialty for a long long time. I run every day and go to the gym so you can shelf that anemic weakling statement for some hipster new jacks. Veganism done correctly is a mind body and spirit path with nothing but benefits for the self and society. Myself and many others have been so jazzed today with all the people we've seen online bringing up this liberation ethic with there posts today. Thank you from us for being a voice for the voiceless today. The arc of humanity will bend towards compassion if we just keep up the pressssssssure!

the_bondsmanIt strikes me that some people seem so quick to judge with short sighted comments claiming that something like "vegaism" can be done "correctly" and that others are just "doing it wrong." Is that not like like saying that a "religious experience" can be done "correctly." Not to be rude but maybe we ought to step back and fucking get over ourselves, plane and simple. I'll tell you first hand that if we think that animal husbandry done well and with moral commitment isn't also a "mind, body and spirit path" we are being intentionally closed minded, arrogant and are a world class turds. I encourage us all to get off our soap box, get out of our echo chamber of social media friends and extend a hand/cup of coffee or tea to those that think different than us. I don't have the answer, you don't have the answer but I'd bet we could find something that we agree on and go fro there.

jonnysurferLooks so great!!!

frankalpineVEGAN 🖖🏻

sicker_than_your_averagecretinI'm not vegan. Alot of my friends are. Can also say that if you take the time and do everything right, you'd never know you weren't eating meat. It all comes down to one's personal choice. Do it, or don't. Simple as that. But don't get on social media and rant and rave how people who don't eat meat are weird, or its some way linked to some religious aspect. Simply put, you don't need to kill something to live. It's true. Wish I had the strength and conviction to live it, but I don't. So if you're gonna be closed minded, just don't comment. Rant complete! Lol!

patriciomiguelulloaDont suffer fools @glenefriedman you rule.

raineydaydelibNew fan ❤

drmattasticEating meat is a personal choice. It seems that simple if you're not aware of the environmental impact. Watch "Before the Flood" or "Cowspiracy" or any of the other documentaries that point out the many ways that the meat industry is destroying the world. Once you have educated yourself you will realize that eating meat is a personal choice that impacts everyone and everything on earth. If you are aware of the consequences and continue to eat omnivorously then you're destroying the environment because you selfishly enjoy the taste of meat. I'm not talking about warmer winters, or deforestation in a foreign land that you'll never see. I'm talking about mass extinction. I used to enjoy the taste of animals but now I realize that it was incredibly selfish and cruel. I'm ashamed of my youthful ignorance. @glenefriedman - not that you need my approval but saying whatever you want whenever you want is absolutely punk as fuck. So spread the word and save the world. 🗣✌🏾️🌎

jimsphotosDude nobody is talking shot except you. The food I got was local organic meat that lived in a pasture. It was great. Stop judging other because your opinion is worthless.

glenefriedman@jimsphotos hey jimbo, many people ask what the fuck do you eat, how do you enjoy TG, this was my reply, do as you like, but if my opinion or what i present is not of interest, it's just fine if you don't follow, I'm not here for your entertainment ✌🏽️

rickbringI feel like the only people that get offended by something as meaningless as turkey and meat are....Wait for it..... Americans. Such an angry bunch

mettauniverseJim has a good point. What about people who raise free range organic anti biotic free animals in a humane and environmentally friendly manner? Not everyone supports industrial farming. It isn't so black and white. I think if my immigrant grandparents who's country was literally almost starved to death by Russia. They luckily got out of there, made a life in the USA and worked hard and enjoyed meat all their lives. They are in their mid 90's now and outlived many of their friends by decades. I'm sure the movies you recommend watching make some great points but again there are other perspectives to look at this issue from. I know vegans an vegetarians who had to go back on meat because they became anemic or had other health problems. It's a complex issue that really depends on the individuals physical, spiritual and intellectual circumstances so pushing a movie or two with one point of view just won't cut it in my opinion. I do think that starting your post off using language like "idiots" is unwise as it will immediately put people in the defensive as it's insulting. I get the vibe that many believe that being "punk rock" is about provocation but provocation just puts people on the defensive. If you want to educate people or share your beliefs wouldn't you want to use language and an attitude that fosters RECEPTION instead - or is that not cool and not punk?

wagnerworkshop🙏🏼👌🏼🌱

benpowellmusicDamn straight 👊🏽🎉🍻🤘

wagnerworkshopLotta people are offended just like their ideas about "Gods" are easily bruised...

glenefriedman@mettauniverse i appreciate your long thought out reply, some others replied to "humane" killing, really does not make sense to most, especially when unnecessary in this day and age, seriously, why raise the animals to kill anyway, gross. Anyway the only post i started with idiots was a reply to people berating vegan choices as stupid or self righteous when the meal can so obviously be friendly to the planet, and unselfish as meat eating is. OMG no turkey no animals what are we supposed to eat people would ask, while putting down harshly those who care about the environment and some the animals lives... that was my reply. I hope for better, it's not about a movie or two, these were SIMPLE tools of education. I speak frankly, sometimes its seen as harsh some times passionate, it depends on what you're coming to the table with. Being vegan is clearly a choice, clearly a minority position, so occasionally needs some harsh language surrounding it to wake people up, strong points are strong points, punk, hip hop, skateboarders, we are mostly an open minded bunch breaking down traditional barriers in life and in the mind. Some in their older years have fallen back on easier paths of not questioning or continuing to look for better on this planet, that's there prerogative, but my calling is to inspire better whatever it takes. I make mistakes sometimes, can be harsh others. Fuck it, lets all just do something, do the best we can. Continuing old ways that destroy the environment? No we all can do better. Learn about it and you will see where my passion comes from ✌🏽️

prographix_bknyI'm new to the game, but definitely get it... especially since I am a Brooklyn born Italian and most friends and family are amazed that there are things that I can actually eat...

warranessYour post was inspiring to me.. I'm digging in the vegan vault.. Change is good & Clean change is better..!

syn1cThis was my first Thanksgiving as a vegan and it was awesome! In a family of meat eating people it felt really great to know I didn't contribute to the slaughter of innocent animals.

mettauniverseThanks for the reply. I'd like to address the "why raise animals just to kill them" question. My answer is - NATURE. Nature is a food chain and something is always eating something else otherwise earth would be a bleak lifeless landscape. Animals raised humanely are usually harvested humanely where there is no anticipation or pain felt. Humans are either putting dead flesh or dead plants etc into their systems to stay alive. There's strong science that shows plants have intelligent consciousness just like animals. Shit, indigenous cultures see some plants of the psychedelic type as actual Gods and consume them to commune with them- and if you have ever taken any yourself I'm sure you can attest there is some higher intelligence in them from what you experience and see. We raise and rip all kinds of vegetation from the ground and stuff them down our throats. Lots of vegetarian crops are super destructive to the planet as well wasting way to much water. It's super complex. And stopping industrial farming alone won't save the planet. Nuclear meltdowns, air pollution, mountains of industrial plastics filling the ocean, global warming turning the oceans into an acid bath, fossil fuel usage and on and on - again not black and white - lots of gray complexity in between. I think if you see veganism as something positive that you want to promote for the better of the planet and people it would be more prudent to promote it in an equallypositive way knowing you will get negative resistance and not stooping down with it and coming off as angry and defensive. I commend you for taking on the task of being a minority in this respect and speaking out and trying to educate but don't let it make you bitter cuz it will nullify any good intentions.

glenefriedman@mettauniverse not to be negative, your politeness is definitely appreciated, but just watch that one film COWSPIRACY it's on Netflix if you have that, you can find it. As a caring human i KNOW you will learn from it, just from your reply i see caring , but also see some areas you could use some further education in, no hard feelings, I wasn't born knowing what i know now. Check it out, if you get anything out of my work do me the favor and check that out 👊🏽 - and if you are inspired by that there are Many more sources of good information, films, books, webpages, lots. Check it out, i even have a page on my website that might be a good intro www.BurningFlags.com/news/why-vegan/ ✌🏽️

mettauniverseI will watch it and I'll let you know what I think.

School of Life Monday:
Resilience In Hard Times

At the very darkest points of individual and national life, we need – more than ever – to practice the art of resilience

Sunday Sermon:
Michael Moore’s to do list for a Revolution:
An Intervention for Liberals

from Boing Boing
We have a new leader in America. Known for his distinct regional accent and often seen wearing a baseball cap at rallies, he starred in a show on NBC, and holds strong opinions about guns and the NRA. He may not be the leader you saw coming, but you're going to see a lot more of him: Michael Moore. The documentary filmmaker shuns the activist label he is often given. In a recent LA Times interview Moore asserted, "I'm not an activist, I'm a citizen. It's redundant to say I'm an activist. We all should be active." Moore has been very active, and has made films that take on some of America's most complex and controversial topics -- globalization, gun violence, 9/11, our healthcare system, the economy, war, and most recently, Donald Trump, someone he did see coming. Unlike the Democrats.
Moore tried to warn the left in July, when he wrote a piece titled simply "5 Reasons Why Trump Will Win. In it, he did not mince words: "Go ahead and say the words, 'cause you'll be saying them for the next four years: 'PRESIDENT TRUMP.' Never in my life have I wanted to be proven wrong more than I do right now." With his midwestern directness and efficiency, Moore then proceeded to list how and why Donald Trump was going to win.
Liberals feel aimless and powerless, falling all over each other trying to figure out what happened. Like teenagers at a party that went off the rails, some are locked in the bathroom crying, some are fighting amongst themselves, others are telling everyone it's going to be fine, and some are standing on the kitchen table yelling, trying to restore order in futility. The left needs a designated driver, and Michael Moore is already in the driveway with the car warmed up, waiting for Democrats to pull themselves together and get in.
After the election, Moore posted another 5-point list, this time, a" Morning After To-Do List." Item number one? "Take over the Democratic Party and return it to the people. They have failed us miserably." It might sound like pointing fingers, or running for office, but it's not. It was statement of tough love telling us what was necessary to lay the groundwork for an effective movement against Trump. Two days later, in an interview with LA Times reporter Steven Zeitchik, he said he that he wanted to head that movement:
You live in a country where a majority of its citizens have said they believe there's climate change, they believe women should be paid the same as men, they want a debt-free college education, the don't want us invading countries, they want a raise in the minimum wage, and they want a single-payer true universal health care system. None of that has changed. We live in a country where the majority agree with the "liberal" position. We just lack the liberal leadership to make that happen.
Hillary Clinton won the widest margin of the popular vote in the history of presidential election defeats, but lost in electoral votes -- and her supporters are still losing their minds. Also, on the 100th anniversary of a woman's right to vote, electing the first female president seemed like it was meant to be. Now, Twitter reads like a manic-depressive's drunken journal, riddled with earnest hashtags desperately trying to unify the bloodied left, and gloating trolls on the right who were all absent from gym class the day the other kids learned what sportsmanship was.
After appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" along with Rudy Giuliani and Paul Ryan yesterday morning, the in-demand Moore took time to answer questions from Boing Boing:
***
Maureen Herman: Do you see yourself as a leader or what role do you see yourself in now?
Michael Moore: I am doing my part to help lead the opposition, and will work with others to do so. Less meetings, more action. I tried to warn people about Trump winning -- I now have a responsibility to stop him from doing any harm. At least now people are listening to me.
***
He was right when he said Trump would win, but his article did not go particularly viral at the time, considering Moore's general popularity. It didn't get re-posted, re-tweeted, or shared the way the left, myself included, spread around self-soothing articles on our preferred candidate or editorials painting Trump as an impossible joke. Maybe Moore's perspective was not taken seriously, or it was ignored out of fear of facing the reality we are in now. Maybe we thought that embracing the possibility of a Trump presidency would jinx the election. Whatever the reason, we didn't listen, and we also didn't listen when he said back in 2015 that Trump was going to be the Republican Party's nominee.
"That doesn't make me feel good, the fact that I was right. I never wanted to be more wrong," the outspoken liberal director said in an LA Times interview. "I just don't live in the bubble of New York and L.A. and I was worried with what I was witnessing in the Midwest, the Rust Belt, what I call the 'Brexit' states."
Moore does not make his predictions based on algorithms, polls, and self-satisfied soothsaying. He pays attention to the root causes, he sees how systemic problems play out in individual lives -- it's what he has always done in his films. Michael Moore is as woke as they get. He kept his eye on the ball while the rest of us looked away, assuming it would land in our glove. Well, it got dropped and we lost the game.
There's no Red Cross for losing an election, but that's the kind of thing people are looking for. Sure, there are existing Democratic organizations, and nonprofits that work for liberal concerns, like the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and NAACP, and donations are coming in. People want to do something. But they need to do something different. Well, yesterday, Michael Moore posted a handy to do list on Twitter

#1. A massive nationwide opposition movement has exploded. It must continue. I am part of this. You are, too.

Must quickly and decisively form an opposition movement, the likes of which hasn't been seen since the 1960s. I will do my part to help lead this, as I'm sure many others (Bernie, Elizabeth Warren, MoveOn, the hip-hop community, DFA, etc.) will, too. The core of this opposition force will be fueled by young people who, as with Occupy Wall Street and Black Lives Matter, don't tolerate B.S. and are relentless in their resistance to authority. They have no interest in compromising with racists and misogynists.

#2. Prepare for Trump's Impeachment now. Narcissism and greed and the fact he's a sociopath will lead to him breaking the law.

Prepare to impeach Trump. Just as the Republicans were already planning to do with President Hillary from Day One, we must organize the apparatus that will bring charges against him when he violates his oath and breaks the law -- and then we must remove him from office.

#3. Plan now to join millions in civil disobedience when Trump nominates his first Supreme Court Justice.

Must commit right now to a vigorous fight (including civil disobedience, if necessary) which will block any and all Donald Trump Supreme Court nominees who do not meet our approval. We demand the Democrats in the Senate aggressively filibuster any nominees who support Citizens United or who oppose the rights of women, immigrants and the poor. This is non-negotiable.

#4. The DNC must apologize to Bernie Sanders for trying to rig the fight against him, for defaming him, for cheating.

Demand the DNC apologize to Bernie Sanders for trying to fix the primaries against him, for spinning the press to ignore his historic campaign, for giving Clinton the questions in advance at the Flint debate, for its latent ageism and anti-Semitism in trying to turn voters against him because of his age or religious beliefs, and for its anti-democracy system of "super-delegates" who are elected by no one. We all know now had Bernie been given a fair shot, he probably would have been the nominee and he -- as the true outsider and "change" candidate -- would have inspired and fired up the base and soundly defeated Donald Trump. If no apology is soon forthcoming from the DNC, that's ok -- when we take over the Democratic Party (see yesterday's To-Do List, #1), we will issue the apology in person.

#5. Obama must appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the FBI Director's illegal interference in the election.

Demand that President Obama establish a Special Prosecutor to investigate who and what was behind FBI Director James Comey's illegal interference into the Presidential election 11 days before the vote was held.

#6. Abolish electoral college and electronic voting; Election Day held on the weekend, restore voting rights of former prisoners

Begin a national push while it's fresh in everyone's mind for a constitutional amendment to fix our broken electoral system: 1. Eliminate the Electoral College -- popular vote only. 2. Paper ballots only -- no electronic voting. 3. Election Day must be made a holiday for all -- or held on a weekend so more people vote. 4. All citizens, regardless of any run-ins with the criminal "justice" system, must have the right to vote. (In swing states like Florida and Virginia, 30-40% of all Black men are prohibited by law from voting.)
#7. President Obama: send the Army Corps of Engineers to Flint to replace the water pipes. The water is still unusable.
Convince President Obama to immediately do what he should have done a year ago: Send in the Army Corps of Engineers to Flint to dig up and replace all the poisoned pipes. NOTHING HAS CHANGED; the water in Flint is still unusable.
Will try to get these done by sundown. More To-Do tomorrow...
--Michael Moore
It is not just Moore's accurate political predictions or successful films that make him the right person to lead the left out of the darkness, and it's not his common presence on major talk shows that inspired me to write this article. It was my personal experience with Michael Moore during the 2000 presidential campaign that revealed the kind of guy he was, his core values, and what he thought was possible for America. Sustained, passionate and authentic concern for the welfare of others is hard to find, and even harder to fake. That is what I learned that Michael was all about.
We met the night of the 2000 MTV Video Awards, when a video he directed for Rage Against the Machine was nominated for Best Video. I became friendly with him and his wife, was invited to see him speak at a Ralph Nader for President rally, and a few weeks later, out to dinner. It was at dinner that he spoke eloquently and personally about his hopes and dreams for America, always peppering his points with the stories and struggles of real people. He was so full of belief in the promise of real change, and most importantly, in the ability of everyday people to come together to make it happen. He was supporting Nader's campaign with gusto, and in fact, that nights, he inspired me to vote third party for the first time. Moore left New York not long afterwards to work on what would become the Oscar-winning documentary, Bowling for Columbine. We all know what happened in the 2000 election, when votes for Ralph Nader ate up Al Gore's margin and won George Bush the presidency. I plead guilty.
For as right as he's been, Moore is just as able to admit past mistakes, which he demonstrated famously on Bill Maher's Real Time, when he and Maher literally begged Ralph Nader not to run for president again in 2004. It was not a stunt. He learned the hard way something very profound and critical from the 2000 election: that real change only happens from the bottom up. In a 2010 interview with Amy Goodman for Democracy Now, Moore reflected on his changed stance about third parties:
I have this basic position about Ralph. I've known him for many, many years. He has done so much good for this country. I also believe that he doesn't really have a handle on what the proper strategy is to get this country in our hands. I don't see him ever working with the grassroots or with the people or being in touch with the people in any way, shape or form. if we really want to try and get this power in our hands, in the people's hands, in the hands of the working people of this country, then we should, on a very grassroots level, from the bottom up, be doing things -- whether it's running for local office, or taking over the local Democratic Party."
The game is rigged in America when it comes to third parties. There's no way that that's ever going to work. And so, then how, instead of letting the game, I guess, rig us, what can we do to the game itself? And if the game is, well, we have these two political parties which are really very much like one party, why don't we make sure that one of those parties actually is a second party and start locally and do that? And that's what I encourage people to do. That's my approach."
If earnest optimism and the belief in significant change were Moore's greatest flaws in 2000, they are now an asset that over a half of the country desperately needs. What he learned from that election and every one since, is reflected in his to do list. This is not just wild revolutionary posturing. This came from being in the trenches. It came from losing and understanding what it takes to win. It came from seeing the impact of an election on the working folks who have inspired his life's work, and wanting sincerely to stop the suffering.
So the morning after the 2016 election, when MSNBC's Rachel Maddow very accurately posted the very real impact of third party votes, it echoed the frustration of 2000. So if anyone was wondering why Moore and others who initially supported Bernie Sanders didn't go "Bernie or Bust," like our younger counterparts, it comes from what voters like myself experienced firsthand, having lived through eight years of a Bush presidency.

Moore is not afraid to call the Democratic party out on its mistake with Bernie Sanders, and the role that played in the election, and he makes that clear on his to do list. He doesn't blame third party voters for Trump -- He holds the Democratic party responsible for leading them there. He knows there are other factors, like the impact of prisoners without voting rights -- people who are subject to punishment under the law, but not allowed to participate in the system of government. He recognizes that even if Hillary had won, things are still very broken, just by virtue of what happened to Sanders. Moore's razor sharp focus is on changing, the Democratic party from the inside.

Moore is also careful not to blame racism for the election results. He is very aware of and concerned about the racial tension in the country, but he stresses that it should not keep us from looking at the very real economic issues that put Trump in the White House, as he told the LA Times
The Democratic Party doesn't seem to get it. Working people that are both African American and white -- don't make it a racial thing -- have suffered at the hands of both Republicans and Democrats," Moore said. He grew more fiery. "The DNC has to resign. They all have to resign."
***
Maureen Herman: People would love to see Trump ousted from office, but most think it's unrealistic. What do you say to that?
Michael Moore: We must work every path that leads to stopping Trump -- legal, popular opinion, mass protest, forcing elected officials to obstruct his every negative move.
***
In his "Morning After" list, Moore warned that Democrats in Congress who were not ready to fight "must step out of the way and let those of us who know the score lead the way in stopping the meanness and the madness that's about to begin." In the LA Times interview, Moore doubled down on the goal of removing Trump. "I don't believe anyone in the media who says we're going to have four years of Trump. This is a man who doesn't have any ideology; the only thing he believes in is Donald Trump. And that's usually a one-way ticket out of office."

***
Maureen Herman: What can people do immediately to get involved with this movement?
Michael Moore: Find the protests in your area and show up. If there are none, start one. Post photos and video on social media. Stay aware of other things going on and get involved!

Another documentary filmmaker, comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, posted a text message to his daughter, in answer to her asking how he was doing after the election. It sums up where a lot of us are, or need to be right now:
Numb, but it's just put the fire back in me. It's time for me to make a big noise. Protect your rights, protect the gays, protect minorities. This will wake up the strength and good people. I know it sounds crazy, but a lot of good will come from this. Too many good people just got a huge wake up call. It's OK to be sad and scared, but love, the real beautiful kind of love, comes out of times like these. We're the new 60s. Time to love and kick ass, and stand up to sexism and racism.
So all hands on deck. Get in the car with Uncle Mike. And yes, we can stop at Denny's on the way home. You're going to need your energy.
